What does it cost to move to Brisbane?

How we calculate this

Removalists & transit. Interstate removalists price by the cubic metre your belongings occupy in the truck. We map your dwelling size to a volume band (roughly 16–26 m³ for a 1–2 bed unit, 28–40 m³ for a 3 bed townhouse, 45–62 m³ for a 4+ bed house) and multiply by an all-in per-m³ rate for the corridor you’re coming from, fuel levy included. A backload applies roughly a 45% discount. The Sydney→Brisbane result is calibrated against the widely quoted $3,500–6,000 dedicated / $2,400–3,300 backload range for a 3-bedroom home.

Bond & rent in advance. Fixed by Queensland law: the bond is four weeks’ rent and rent in advance is capped at two weeks, at any rent level, since 30 September 2024. Both are calculated from the weekly rent you set (seeded from the current RTA median when you pick a suburb).

End-of-lease clean. A Brisbane bond clean plus carpet steam, scaled by dwelling size — only included if you’re leaving a rental.

Connection, vehicle & pets. A flat band for retailer electricity and gas establishment fees plus internet setup (the Energex connection itself is free); per vehicle for a Queensland safety certificate, CTP, plates and licence transfer; and a per-pet interstate road-transport band. These last two don’t apply to a move within Queensland.

How much does it cost to move to Brisbane?
Budget roughly $8,000–12,000 upfront for an interstate household move into a rental — the biggest pieces are the removalist ($3,500–6,000 for a dedicated 3-bedroom truck from Sydney, less on a backload), a rental bond of four weeks' rent, and two weeks' rent in advance. A local move within Queensland or a small unit is lower; a large house or a full-pack service is higher. Always get three removalist quotes.
How much bond can a landlord charge in Queensland?
Since 30 September 2024 the rental bond is capped at four weeks' rent for every general tenancy, with no rent threshold. The bond must be lodged with the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA), not kept by the agent. At the start of a tenancy a lessor also cannot ask for more than two weeks' rent in advance.
Is backloading worth it for an interstate move?
Backloading — sharing truck space with other households' loads — typically costs 40–50% less than a dedicated truck. The trade-off is less control over pickup and delivery dates and a wider delivery window. It suits flexible moves with a modest volume; time-critical moves or large houses usually need a dedicated truck.
Do I have to re-register my car when I move to Queensland?
Yes. You have 14 days to register your vehicle in Queensland once you're a resident, which usually means a safety certificate, CTP insurance, registration and new plates. You have three months to transfer your driver licence. Budget around $200–330 per vehicle all up.
What upfront costs do people forget when moving to Brisbane?
The commonly missed ones are the end-of-lease bond clean and carpet steam at the place you're leaving, utility connection and establishment fees, driver-licence and vehicle-registration transfers, mail redirection, and — if your move-out and move-in dates don't line up — a week of temporary accommodation or a month of storage.
